Sacramento semi-trailer driver sentenced after fatal crash in Butte County

A Sacramento truck driver was convicted by a jury Monday for his role in a 2020 crash that killed two people, the Butte County District Attorney's Office said. Jobanijit Singh, 26, was found guilty of two counts of involuntary manslaughter. On June 10, 2020, Singh was behind the wheel of a 40,000-pound truck heading north on Highway 99 when he crashed directly into the rear of a Honda Accord that was stopped at a red light, prosecutors said. David Sims and Lupe Ortiz, both 55, of Los Molinos were killed in the crash. His truck continued on and struck three other vehicles, prosecutors said. Officials said Singh initially said his brakes had failed, but prosecutors said investigators found no tire scuff marks or evidence that Singh took evasive maneuvers. California Highway Patrol investigators also determined that Singh's tires did indeed leave friction marks after the collision, meaning the brakes were working. The jury found that Singh failed to pay attention to traffic ahead, resulting in the deaths of Sims and Ortiz. Singh is scheduled to appear in court for sentencing on October 22. A Sacramento tractor-trailer driver was found guilty by a jury Monday for his role in a 2020 crash that killed two people, the Butte County District Attorney's Office said.

Jobanijit Singh, 26, was found guilty of two counts of negligent homicide.

On June 10, 2020, Singh was driving a 40,000-pound semi-truck heading north on Highway 99 when he crashed directly into the rear of a Honda Accord that was stopped at a red light, prosecutors said. David Sims and Lupe Ortiz, both 55, of Los Molinos, were killed in the crash.

His truck continued driving and rammed three other vehicles, prosecutors said.

Officials said Singh initially said his brakes failed. However, prosecutors said investigators found no tire scuff marks or evidence that Singh took evasive action. California Highway Patrol investigators also determined that Singh's tires did indeed leave tire scuff marks after the collision, meaning the brakes were working.

The jury decided that Singh failed to pay attention to traffic in front of him, resulting in the deaths of Sims and Ortiz.

Singh is scheduled to appear in court for sentencing on October 22.
