Kansas officials seek candidates for more than 600 positions across the state and more than 200 in Topeka at career fair

TOPEKA, Kansas (WIBW) – State agencies are trying to fill more than 600 positions across the country, and 200 of those vacancies are in the capital city.

Several agencies, including the Kansas Department of Labor, Department of Commerce, and Department of Children and Families, as well as state-run businesses such as the Topeka Lottery, gathered in the ground floor rotunda on Tuesday morning, August 27, to meet with area job seekers. In addition, job seekers had the opportunity to network with agencies and meet with recruiters.

All job seekers can still apply for a job in the state online. All available openings can be found at jobs.ks.gov. There will also be a virtual statewide job fair on September 25 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Audrey Cress, statewide recruiting manager for the Kansas Department of Administration, says that while some government jobs pay less than private sector jobs, she has heard from many workers who are satisfied with the work-life balance and benefits.

“We see a lot of people moving from some jobs in the private sector to the government and are excited that they can bring their child[’s’] baseball games and they can be there to pick up their kids from school,” Cress said.

“Sometimes the salaries aren't as high compared to the private sector,” Cress said. “There's a lot of balance when we talk about the benefits and the work-life balance and really emphasize the opportunity to be useful. I think we as a state really have the ability to really help people and be present in all areas of their lives and that ability to be useful appeals to a lot of people and those are the people we're looking for here in the state.”

At the career fair on Tuesday, a photographer also took professional portraits of the candidates. Registration was not required.
