Restaurant in Greensboro helps accident victim in Eastern Randolph

Sarah Edwards was a passenger in the accident that left two teenagers dead and another injured late last week.

GREENSBORO, NC — A popular Greensboro restaurant is doing its part to assist the family of one of the victims of last week's fatal car crash involving four Eastern Randolph High School students.

Sarah Edwards was a passenger in the crash that killed two teenage boys and seriously injured another girl in Ramseur last Thursday. Edwards has been in hospital ever since, trying to recover from multiple injuries she sustained in the crash.

Edwards' mother works at Freeman's Grub & Pub in Greensboro. Max Hathaway, the restaurant's general manager, told WFMY News 2 on Tuesday that the instinct to help the family was a natural one.

“You know, you can't survive and thrive alone,” Hathaway said. “I grew up in a big tribe. My parents had a lot of friends and whenever something like this happened, all of their friends showed their support. If I was raised that way, why wouldn't I want to do the same?”

Since the accident, Edward's mother has been at her side in the hospital and has been unable to carry out a normal work routine. Hathaway told her to “take as much time off as she needs,” but the restaurant went a step further.

The owners of Freeman's Pub donated $1,000 toward Sarah's medical bills, and the rest of the restaurant's employees plan to send gift certificates for food so they don't have to rely on the hospital's food options.

“I know what it was like to be in the hospital and have kids,” Hathaway said. “The hospital food sucks. We don't want them, no matter how long they're there. We don't want them to have to eat that all the time, you know?”

The other teenager injured in last week's accident, Macie Maness, was released from the hospital on Tuesday after being treated for spinal fractures and broken ribs, among other injuries.

There is no information on how much longer Sarah will have to remain in the hospital. But be sure to follow WFMY News 2 for the latest updates on this ongoing story.
