LMPD officer accused of stealing $4,000 from suspect appears in court

LMPD officer accused of stealing $4,000 from suspect appears in court

A Louisville Metro Police Department officer accused of stealing money from a suspect made his first court appearance Tuesday. Officer Javar Downs pleaded not guilty to charges of theft and abuse of authority. Police said Downs was caught on video stealing $4,000 taken from a suspect upon being booked into jail. Downs is scheduled to appear in court again next month. Following his arrest, LMPD said interim Chief Paul Humphrey began the process of firing Downs.

A Louisville Metro Police Department officer accused of stealing money from a suspect made his first court appearance Tuesday.

Officer Javar Downs pleaded not guilty to theft and abuse of office charges.

According to police, Downs was filmed carrying $4,000 that had been confiscated from a suspect when he was taken to jail.

Downs is scheduled to appear in court again next month.

Following his arrest, LMPD announced that interim Chief Paul Humphrey had begun Downs' termination processes.
