Animal cruelty case in Warwick – NECN

A Warwick, Rhode Island man appeared in court Tuesday, a day after authorities made a disturbing discovery in his home.

NBC10's Boston affiliate WJAR reports that 22-year-old Michael Diaz has been charged with animal cruelty in Kent County District Court.

Police said seven dogs were found in his Sand Pond Road home on Monday – three were dead and the others were in poor health, WJAR reports.

The four live dogs lacked adequate food and water and had to be removed from the home for medical attention, according to police. They are being cared for at the Warwick Animal Shelter.

One of the dead dogs was found in a garbage bag, WJAR reported, citing police, and the house smelled strongly of feces, urine and decomposition.

Diaz faces multiple charges, including three counts of unnecessary cruelty to animals resulting in death. He pleaded no contest Tuesday and was released on $5,000 bail, WJAR reports. Attorney information was not immediately available.
