Man booked into Edgefield jail, accused of child's death in 2020 | Home

EDGEFIELD COUNTY, SC (WFXG) – A 30-year-old Moncks Corner man is now behind bars in Edgefield County for choking a child.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has charged Caleb Jochen Carter with two counts of unlawfully endangering or harming a child or willfully abandoning a child.

The arrest warrants state that Carter, who had supervision or custody of a child and was responsible for his or her welfare in October 2020, unlawfully exposed the child to an “unreasonable risk of harm affecting the child's life, physical or mental health, or safety.”

Court documents confirm that Carter placed or placed an unsafe mouthpiece in the child's mouth, blocking the child's upper airway and causing him to die.

The child's age was not disclosed by SLED, but the affidavit states that Carter inflicted or allowed numerous injuries to the child, including bruising to the chest, back, scrotum, eye, ear and jaw.

According to an August 26 SLED press release, Carter was booked into the Edgefield County Detention Center.

The case is being prosecuted by the 11th Judicial District Attorney's Office.
