One dead, four others hospitalized after crash in downtown Des Moines

DES MOINES, Iowa – One person is dead and four people are hospitalized after a crash in downtown Des Moines.

Several emergency responders were near 7th Street and Grand Avenue early Wednesday, calling it an accident after a pursuit by an outside agency.

Officials said two vehicles collided near the intersection. They said one of the vehicles left the road and came to a stop on the south side of Grand Avenue. One of the cars then struck the Ruan Center, damaging it.

Des Moines police said the Iowa State Patrol is conducting the investigation.

A portion of Grand Avenue in downtown is temporarily closed. Des Moines police said all closed streets will reopen to morning traffic.
