Common and Pete Rock pay tribute to J Dilla and Trugoy in “Dreamin”

Common and Pete Rock pay tribute to two deceased friends in their video for “Dreamin'”: Trugoy The Dove by J Dilla and De La Soul.

From their joint LP The Auditorium Vol. 1Directed by Raven Jackson, Dreamin' takes fans back in time with home video footage Common shot over the years.

At one point in the clip he shows the late Dilla rapping in the studio: “I heard melodies and rhythms all night long./ This was a dream that felt real, like a fight./ What made it real was that J Dilla was there in the light!

He later mentions Trugoy while holding up a photo of the late MC.

When he saw the pigeon Trugoy, he started to fly. I told him: “Pos and Mase, De La will never die!”

Common recently spoke about what the album means to him ahead of its release.

“It all started with a dream for me,” he wrote on Instagram. “A dream to let the world know I was here. A dream to be a part of hip hop. A dream to be an MC at a level where De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, KRS-One and Ice Cube knew who I was. It was a dream of mine to collaborate with the LEGENDARY @realpeterock (on more than just one song). I've dreamed of this my whole life.”

I am totally excited and extremely grateful to announce our new album – The Auditorium Vol. 1 comes out July 12th. I have to say, the love you all have shown has been INCREDIBLE. And you know, every time someone says they're excited about the album you're doing with Pete Rock, it just makes me happy to be a part of this art form.”

He added: “We pray and hope that this music moves your spirit and stays with you for the rest of your life. Thank you to everyone who contributed and to all of you for the supreme love. God bless you.”

Questlove thanks Common and Pete Rock for inspiring The Roots to complete the new album

The Chicago rap legend also celebrated The Auditorium Vol. 1 as some of his best work to date.

Speaking at a MusiCares panel earlier this year, he said: “You're going to think I'm just talking, but this new Pete Rock song. I'll see you all when I come back, whenever I come back, and you can all tell me if I'm talking rubbish or not.”

“It’s in my top [three]. A few people have come up to me and said, 'Yo, this is one of your best albums.' So I'm really excited.”
