Wholesale egg prices increased by 236% compared to 2023

Egg production in the United States is on a downward trend.

A recent production report shows that there was a 2% decrease this July compared to the same time last year, with the total being over 9 billion eggs.
The reason for the decline is bird flu. The birds killed because of this disease have affected the number of laying hens, which has dropped by about 8 million birds. This decline is now having a major impact on egg prices, according to a USDA livestock analyst.

“We found that the wholesale egg prices in New York, which we track, were about $2.57 in July and rose to about $4.14 yesterday,” explains Shayle Shagam.

On the wholesale market, prices rose by 60% in one month. However, if we compare this figure with prices a year ago, whole eggs are now sold at a price that is 236% more expensive.

Shagam expects the size of laying hen flocks to increase next year, which in turn will increase production and lower egg prices for consumers.
