One of boxing's most recognizable faces returns to action on September 14 in Las Vegas when Saul “Canelo” Alvarez takes on Edgar Berlanga. Alvarez will defend his WBC, WBA and WBO super middleweight titles in the fight, with Berlanga being the WBA's mandatory challenger.

While Alvarez fights continue to be major events, this is another fight that will be seen by many as a disappointment after Alvarez failed to defend his belts against the division's top two challengers, David Benavidez and David Morrell. When Benavidez and Morrell moved up to light heavyweight after feeling their bullet wound never came, Alvarez faced Jaime Munguia in May and now faces Berlanga, who inexplicably moved up the rankings to a mandatory title spot after Morrell left the division, apparently in part because Alvarez and his team wanted the fight.

Alvarez was the reigning undisputed champion in the 168-pound division before being stripped of the IBF title after failing to meet his obligation to face the mandatory challenger. Now he faces a man, Berlanga, who began his career with 16 consecutive first-round knockouts. Although he is still undefeated, Berlanga has only scored one knockout in his last five fights.

The supporting act includes some well-known names, including former world champions Erislandy Lara, Danny Garcia, Caleb Plant, Rolando Romero and Stephen Fulton.
