West Virginia linebacker retires from football due to injury

Jairo Faverus, a redshirt junior linebacker from Amsterdam, officially announced on social media Tuesday night that he would be retiring from football for the foreseeable future due to injury.

“Dear family, friends and fans. I come to you with a heavy heart,” Faverus said in an Instagram post on Tuesday. “After recovering from my second serious knee injury, I was advised to take off my cleats because this injury is so serious.”

Faverus was one of the players West Virginia head coach Neal Brown noted received a redshirt this season for medical reasons. Brown also said he expected the injury to be career-ending.

“A great guy who really contributed a lot on special teams, but several injuries set him back,” Brown said of Faverus after the first practice of fall camp this year.

In his college career at WVU, Faverus had a total of nine tackles, six assists and one solo.

“My future is still uncertain, but I have decided to retire from football for now. So I want to take a moment to thank everyone who has supported me and believed in me along the way,” Faverus continued on Instagram. “I appreciate all of you very much and I couldn't have made it here without you. This experience has been nothing short of everything I could have dreamed of from football.”

Faverus ended the article with the statement: “Once a mountaineer, always a mountaineer.”
