Cardinals tickets available at ridiculously low prices despite historic attendance decline

The St. Louis Cardinals have a attendance problem.

On Tuesday night against the San Diego Padres, the Cardinals announced the lowest attendance at Busch Stadium since they moved into the team in 2006. The team sold a record-breaking 27,224 tickets for the game, but it gets worse. St. Louis Post-Dispatch According to reports, almost 13,000 fans actually passed through the turnstiles.

And it wasn't just a problem with one game, either. Tickets for Wednesday's game against the Padres are available for as little as $6 on the Cardinals' website, and even cheaper on ticket broker websites. One eagle-eyed X user (formerly of Twitter) noticed tickets being offered for $0 and $1.

Some research has shown that seats in the fourth row of Section 103 are available for $7 apiece on Ticketmaster. SeatGeek has dozens of tickets available for $2 and $1. And for comparison, the game starts at 6:45 p.m., so it's not an afternoon game that fans will have to miss because of work.

This is a pretty amazing development. St. Louis has always been one of the most attended cities in MLB. Now the Cardinals don't seem to be getting fans to come to games. Even Padres commentators Don Orsillo and Mark Grant have noticed.

There are a number of reasons for this. First, the Cardinals are having a difficult season. Going into Wednesday's game, they are 65-67 and 10 1/2 games behind the Milwaukee Brewers for first place in the National League Central. They are also seven games out of the final playoff spot. Fans could be excited about this year's team.

Plus, the weather in St. Louis is terrible right now. There's a heat warning in effect for Wednesday, with highs expected to reach 34 degrees and humidity above 50 percent. That's not a pleasant climate to watch a baseball game.

It will be exciting to see if this remains the case throughout the rest of the season.
