On this day in 2001, Toby Keith released “Pull My Chain,” the first of many No. 1 albums

On this day (28 August) in 2001, Toby Keith released his sixth studio album Pull my chain. The album included the No. 1 hits “My List,” “I'm Just Talkin' About Tonight,” and “I Wanna Talk About Me.” It was also Keith's first album to feature the Billboard Top country album charts and his first crossover hit.

When Keith debuted with “Should've Been a Cowboy,” it debuted at No. 1. He released several more No. 1 singles throughout the decade, but the same could not be said for his album. His debut was the only collection to miss the top ten, peaking at No. 17 on the country album survey. None of these reached the top of the charts, however.

Keith started his career off strong and continued to gain momentum. His songs were all over the radio and fans were desperate for more. Many remember him as a country star of the 90s, but he didn't become a superstar until the new millennium. As the sun set on the 90s, it rose for Keith.

Toby Keith began the new millennium with a series of hit singles and his 2001 album, Pull my chainIt exceeded the Billboard Top Country Albums charts and reached number 9 on the Billboard 200. The Oklahoma native really hit his stride in the next decade. Between 2000 and 2010, he had 15 chart-topping singles. He also released eight albums during this period, seven of which topped the charts.

Pull my chain kicked off an impressive chart run for TK. He had four consecutive No. 1 country albums. Perhaps even more impressive, all eight albums he released that decade were top 10 crossover hits. Three topped the all-genre list. Billboard 200 album charts and anything but Pull my chain reached a place among the top five.

The most successful album of this time and Keith’s career was Shock you all. It spent 13 weeks at the top of the country charts and one week at the top of the all-genre charts.

Keith's winning streak did not end with his 2009 album American Journey. He continued to release hit albums throughout his career. He released five more top-five country albums, four of which were top-10 crossover hits. It was not until his last album Peso in my pocket (2021) failed to reach these heights. It reached number 25 on the country charts and did not reach the Billboard 200.
