Nearly 50 people arrested in Gwinnett after nine-month investigation into Surenos street gang – WSB-TV Channel 2

GWINNETT COUNTY, Georgia – After a nine-month investigation by the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office, nearly 50 people are in custody facing drug and weapons charges.

In August 2023, the Sheriff's Office announced that it had uncovered an element of the Surenos criminal street gang that was trafficking weapons and large quantities of drugs throughout Georgia.

The special investigation team assumes that the arrested suspects have links to Mexican drug cartels.

During the investigation, authorities seized $311,873.00 in cash, 14 firearms, 194.12 kilos of methamphetamine, 36.8 kilos of cocaine, 6.79 kilos of marijuana, more than 300 fentanyl pills, and several vehicles associated with the Surenos gang.

In total, the GCSO arrested 47 people.

The charges against them range from drug trafficking, use of telecommunications equipment for drug distribution, illegal possession of weapons, activities in connection with criminal street gangs to organized crime.

“Cases like this clearly demonstrate the DEA’s determination to hold violent drug traffickers accountable,” said Robert J. Murphy, Special Agent in Charge of the Atlanta Division of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

The Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office says the investigation is ongoing and additional arrests may be made.
