Dashcam video shows FHP chase on Dolphin Expressway – NBC 6 South Florida

Dashcam video shows a Florida Highway Patrol chase on the Dolphin Expressway ending in an accident and the arrest of a man who allegedly attempted to unload a backpack containing drugs during the pursuit.

It happened around 6:31 p.m. on Sunday when an FHP officer said he was driving east on State Road 836 when he saw a white Chevy Trax weaving through traffic at a high rate of speed, at one point clocked at 91 mph, according to a police report.

The officer stopped the driver and identified him as Shawn Anthony Guerra-Chung, 28.

A police report from Guerra-Chung states that the officer observed him pushing “an unknown object on the rear right floor,” which was later determined to be a green backpack. As the officer approached, he could also smell burnt marijuana and saw that the driver had a blunt in his left ear that appeared to be being smoked.

Guerra-Chung said he was driving fast because he was in a hurry and said he did not have his medical marijuana card with him, according to FHP. He also reportedly denied having any other drugs in the vehicle.

The police officer then asked him to get out so he could search the car, which Guerra-Chung allegedly refused.

“The suspect continued to state that he did not consent to a search and that he needed a supervisor,” an arrest report states. Guerra-Chung then allegedly fled.

The dashcam shows the officer running back to his car and pursuing the driver for about a minute until the suspect slows down and approaches the left shoulder. Then the footage shows the officer performing a PIT maneuver and bringing the car to a stop.

The police officer yells at Guerra-Chung to put his hands up and arrests him.

But when the officer inspected the vehicle, he noticed that the green backpack was missing. Other officers then found the backpack on the right side road west of where the pursuit ended.

In it they found:

  • A pink tube with two clear ziplock bags containing a white powdery substance
  • A small amount of marijuana in a clear plastic bag
  • Packaged marijuana in a blue bag
  • A pink ziplock bag with a clear ziplock bag containing a white powdery substance
  • Two white bottles of Alprazolam
  • A pill bottle with the original label torn off, containing three square tablets believed to be Alprazolam
  • A total of 959 Alprazolam tablets
  • 24 grams of pre-packaged suspected marijuana
  • 28 grams of pre-packaged suspected cocaine

Guerra-Chang was charged with possession of cocaine with intent to resell, possession of a controlled substance, fleeing and resisting an officer, and unauthorized use of a communications device.

“He stated that he fled out of fear and denied that the backpack belonged to him,” a police report said.

The suspect was transported to Jackson West for processing and then to Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
