John Manard dies in prison

A Kansas man who escaped from the Lansing Correctional Facility in a dog crate died in prison over the weekend. Kansas Department of Corrections prison records show John Manard died on Aug. 25 while incarcerated out of state. Manard was serving a sentence for premeditated murder in connection with a fatal 1996 carjacking in Overland Park, Kansas. Toby Young, now known as Toby Dorr, helped Manard escape from Lansing State Prison in February 2006. Dorr met Manard while running a dog rescue program at the prison and smuggled him out in a dog crate. Both were later caught in Tennessee, where they hid in a remote cabin. Dorr pleaded guilty to helping Manard escape and served two years in prison. The case garnered national attention and was highlighted in a 2022 report by NBC Dateline. Dorr later founded a nonprofit organization to help inmates reintegrate into society. She has become a motivational speaker, written a book, and now hosts a podcast. Manard's cause of death is unknown.

Manard was serving a prison sentence for first-degree murder in connection with a fatal 1996 car theft in Overland Park, Kansas. Toby Young, now known as Toby Dorr, helped Manard escape from Lansing State Prison in February 2006.
