New details released in shooting involving deputy sheriff in south Tucson | Local news

TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) – New details have been released in a south Tucson shooting involving a deputy sheriff.

On August 20 at 5:30 p.m., officers were dispatched to Rudy Garcia Park for a report of a man armed with a knife.

The call said the armed suspect was chasing her and her toddler.

Officers found the victim in the 4800 block of South 6th Avenue.

While officers spoke with the victim, other officers searched the area for the suspect.

During the search, the suspect was found and fled from the officers on foot.

During the pursuit, TPD K-9 Kora was deployed to apprehend the suspect when she was stabbed by the suspect, 21-year-old Ronald Ray Alvarez Jr.

She was taken to the animal hospital to treat her injuries.

Officers continued to pursue the suspect, who ran through numerous residential yards in the area of ​​South 7th Avenue and West Oklahoma Street.

Eventually, an officer began to physically restrain the suspect. While bringing the suspect to the ground, a shot went off from the officer's gun and hit the ground.

Alvarez Jr. was taken into custody and booked into the Pima County Jail on charges of animal cruelty (working animals) and disorderly conduct.
