Latest on Kylian Mbappe's injury: Special mask is being produced, but question marks over return date

France has a custom mask made for Kylian Mbappe to ensure that his Euro 2024 is not over.

It is unclear when the French national team captain will return from breaking his nose in Monday night's win over Austria, but French radio station RTL reported on Tuesday morning that he may be out until the quarter-finals.

The president of the French Football Federation (FFF), Philippe Diallo, confirmed on Tuesday that Mbappe “does not require surgery”, but stressed that more time was needed to assess the extent of the injury and that the coming days would be crucial.

He said: “The news was rather reassuring as there is no surgery planned in the short term. As for his participation in the rest of the tournament, it is still a little premature to give a timetable.”

Mbappe was examined at a hospital in Düsseldorf after the game on Monday evening and left the hospital in the early hours of this morning.

The results show that the striker does not currently require surgery and hopes to be able to play at the European Championships wearing a protective mask.

Mbappe, who set up the only goal of the game last night when Austrian defender Max Wober diverted his cross into his own net, broke his nose in the final five minutes of the game when his face collided with the shoulder of defender Kevin Danso.

“Kylian Mbappe suffered a broken nose during the second half of the Austria-France match this Monday in Düsseldorf,” the FFF said in a statement.

“The captain of the French team was initially treated by medical staff and doctor Franck Le Gall, who diagnosed a broken nose. The diagnosis was confirmed by radiological examinations at the Düsseldorf hospital.

“Kylian Mbappe has returned to the French team's base camp. He will receive treatment over the next few days but will not need immediate surgery.

“A mask will be made so that the number 10 of the French team can think about resuming competition after a period of treatment.”
