Homeless machete attacker released from Maine prison arrested again for knife attack in Portland park

A homeless man who was charged in January with attacking people with a machete outside a Portland apartment complex was arrested again earlier this week on assault and disorderly conduct charges.

Ahmed Hussein Ismail, 38, described as “homeless” in a Portland police news release in February, was arrested in Portland on Tuesday and charged with assault and disorderly conduct.

As of Thursday morning, Ismail has been held in the Cumberland County Jail on $1,500 bail.

According to a Portland police spokesman, Ismail was arrested at the baseball field near Deering Oaks Park.

“[H]He attacked someone with a knife,” the spokesman said. “Based on our records, we believe he is still homeless.”

On January 31, 2023, shortly after 9 p.m., Portland Police responded to a report of a fight at 211 Cumberland Ave. (Franklin Towers).

According to police, a man was involved in the altercation who “walked around the building with a machete and attacked people.”

The alleged attacker, Ahmed Ismail, was tracked down by police and charged with assault, criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon and violating release conditions.

Following his arrest, Ismail was booked into the Cumberland County Jail and charged with illegal possession of a Class “W” drug and trafficking in prison contraband.
