Cheyenne woman charged with theft, sent to jail for meth

A 30-year-old Cheyenne woman is facing multiple charges after she was reportedly caught shoplifting and smuggling methamphetamine into prison.

According to a booking sheet, a Laramie County Sheriff's deputy was called to the Walmart at 2032 Dell Range Blvd. at approximately 2:58 p.m. on Saturday, August 24, for a customer trespassing and made contact with Danni D. Martinez, who was sitting in a vehicle in the parking lot.

The officer said Martinez currently had a suspended driver's license and he eventually admitted to driving the car to the store.

A story of shoplifting

The officer said Martinez, who had previously been arrested for shoplifting at a Walmart without entering the store, was just about to leave the store when staff caught her with unpaid merchandise valued at $488.69.

When the officer asked Martinez to step out of her vehicle and told her she was under arrest, she reportedly resisted and another officer had to help him cuff her wrists so she could be handcuffed.

Martinez was then searched and placed in the back seat of the deputy's patrol car.

The deputy also conducted a hasty search of Martinez's purse and secured it and her phone in the officer's patrol car, as the officers did not want anything stolen from her.

Deputy: Martinez denied possession of any contraband

Martinez was safely transported to the Laramie County Detention Center, where she was searched and reportedly denied possession of any contraband.

However, a more thorough search of her purse reportedly revealed a small, lidded jar containing a crystalline substance resembling methamphetamine in a small pocket.

When questioned, Martinez allegedly denied knowing anything about the glass.

A glass pipe that apparently contained burnt marijuana was also found in the handbag.

Martinez was subsequently charged with carrying a controlled substance into prison, a felony punishable by up to three years in prison, a fine of up to $3,000, or both.

She was also charged with three misdemeanors, including theft, obstructing a peace officer (without personal injury), and possession of a controlled substance in powder or crystal form.

Bond set at $3,000 cash

Martinez made her initial appearance in Laramie County District Court on Tuesday, August 27. Her bail was set at $3,000 cash and her preliminary hearing was scheduled for Wednesday, September 4 at 3 p.m.

Please remember that all suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
