Atlanta rap icon Rich Homie Quan found dead

The Fulton County coroner confirmed the Atlanta rapper's death on Thursday afternoon.

Atlanta rapper Rich Homie Quan has died at the age of 33, the Fulton County Coroner's Office confirmed to 11Alive on Thursday.

The cause of death was not immediately disclosed. The coroner's office said it was notified of his death by Grady Memorial Hospital on Thursday.

11Alive learned that Atlanta police responded to a 911 call from a home on Hamden Forest Drive SW in Atlanta just after 11:20 a.m. Thursday. Records show the home is associated with the rapper, whose real name is Dequantes Devontay Lamar. From the 911 calls obtained by 11Alive, we learned that first responders were called to the home after a man was found unconscious on the couch by his girlfriend.

Atlanta-born Rich Homie Quan rose to fame in the early 2010s and found mainstream music success with his 2013 single “Type of Way.” His 2015 single “Flex” peaked at number 26 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Rich Homie Quan was a member of the music group Rich Gang, with whom he produced music and a number of chart-topping hits as a solo artist in the 2010s. Quan was known for his “melodic flow and catchy hooks,” as described by entertainment magazine Variety.

He was born on October 4, 1990, the medical examiner's office said. In 2011, he began making trap music and collaborating with other Atlanta rappers such as Young Thug and 2 Chainz and other notable rappers such as Gucci Mane, Trinidad James, YG and others, according to Variety.

“He was considered part of an emerging generation of rappers who delivered songs with intense emotion and fiery passion that permeated each release,” Variety said.

According to Rolling Stone, Quan was the eldest of three siblings.

The autopsy into his death is expected to be performed on Friday, the coroner's office said.
