Russell Wilson's injury: Mike Tomlin is “extremely pleased” with Justin Fields' readiness to play

After practicing for the second half of training camp and playing in two preseason games, Russell Wilson's calf is bothering him again, so he was placed on the injured list on Thursday after practicing only on a limited basis.

Injuries are a part of the game, and Mike Tomlin doesn't seem worried that they will affect Wilson's ability to play on Sunday. If Wilson suffers a setback between now and the game against the Falcons, Tomlin is equally unconcerned about Justin Fields' availability.

“If that's the case, I definitely feel very comfortable,” Tomlin told Steelers reporters when asked about the possibility of Fields having to play.

How could Tomlin see it any other way? Fields is the backup quarterback, after all. It's Pittsburgh's job to select a capable second player, and Fields is the next man up.

Because of Wilson's calf injury, which he sustained during pre-practice drills on the first day of training camp, Fields played with the first team for the first two weeks.

Wilson is tough (shoutout to Cam Heyward), with injuries keeping him out of just four of the six games in his 12-year career.

Tomlin said Wilson would have his calf examined “to exercise extreme caution.”
