Take off! Chiefs first-round WR Xavier Worthy scores two touchdowns in season-opening win

Trailing 7-0, the Chiefs got on the scoreboard with Worthy's first NFL touchdown. His 21-yard score put him at 18.45 mph as he gained +14 rushing yards over expected, according to Next Gen Stats.

“Man, it was crazy,” Worthy said of his first touchdown. “We did that in the preseason and I fumbled the ball. So it was pretty bad, but it was good for them to be able to put that much trust in me. I told (offensive coordinator Matt) Nagy that I believed this play was going to lead to a point, and it happened. So it was an incredible moment, my first touchdown in the NFL.”

Although he only touched the ball three times, Worthy's game-changing presence was and remains a blessing to his teammates, according to his quarterback.

“Having him out there by himself just opens up opportunities,” Mahomes said. “When he's out there, they play shell coverages. That gives space to guys like (Travis Kelce) and guys like Rashee (Rice). That's the great thing about this offense. We're able to do all of that and that's when we're at our best. So when we have Hollywood (Brown) out there too, it makes it difficult for defenses to decide who they want to cover.”

Worthy's final touch of the night was his second catch of the game and gave the Chiefs the lead for good, as his 32-yard sprint to the decisive point resulted in a 27-17 lead for Kansas City.

Kansas City then withstood a comeback led by Lamar Jackson and Isaiah Likely.

However, Mahomes and the Super Bowl champions have a new weapon and it didn't take long for him to make a noticeable impression.

Buoyed by the sensational debut of their first-round pick, the two-time reigning Super Bowl champions are on trend heading into 2024.
