NFL Stats Leaders Predictions for 2024: Passing, Rushing and More

Finally, there is regular season NFL football on TV tonight.

There are many small joys on kick-off day. Familiar pre-match theme music gets us in the mood and although the weather hasn't broken yet, football means autumn is coming. By Week 3, half the league's fans could be despondent. But on kick-off day, there is hope.

The greatest joy, however, is that the preview content is finally, mercifully, over. The 16 different ways to talk about the same players, movies, and storylines have all been exhausted now, and the only thing left as previews are the actual games.

But before the season opener between the Ravens and Chiefs, here's one final part of the season preview: I'm predicting all the players who could lead the NFL in five different statistical categories. To examine these markets, I used the odds available on ESPN BET. to calculate implied probabilities. Then I looked at a few key players who could lead the league in their respective categories, and summarized my own (entirely heuristic) percentages at the end of each section below – every single player who could finish No. 1 in the category and his chance of doing so.

The value is not in the product, but in the process. It was cool to learn about the four different occasions that Vinny Testaverde led the league in interceptions thrown, and it was crazy to discover that there's no real way to predict who will lead the league in receiving yards. How we think about individual season leaders is largely a reflection of how we think about the offense (or defense) as a whole, and understanding these units makes us smarter football fans. Let's dig deeper with my look at potential stat leaders for the 2024 NFL season.
