Gordon continued: “Justin [Mandel, his assistant]he always dressed me in the morning. I felt like a damn 95 year old man.

“Asking a 30-year-old boy to put on my damn underwear was embarrassing.”

He spoke about the accident for the first time on social media, sharing an Instagram post with the caption: “As tomorrow is #FathersDay, I have a very important message for all the fathers out there…

“WEAR A HELMET! I had a really bad accident while riding my bike in Connecticut this week.”

“I'm fine, I haven't broken any bones or sustained any major injuries, but I'm a little bruised and I look like a purple potato.”

“I am grateful to all the doctors, nurses and staff at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London who took care of me and examined me, but I am most grateful for my helmet that saved my life. Happy Father's Day and take care, Gx.”

Despite the shock, Gordon stressed that he had no plans to slow down and laughed at talk of ending his career.

“I could sit back, put my feet up, buy a boat and go to the Caribbean, but I'm not interested in that,” he said.

“I love luxury. I love cars, but damn, I work hard for it.”

The chef and his 49-year-old wife Tana returned to their south London mansion in June, which they bought for £2.8 million in 2002.

The house, now worth £7 million, has undergone several renovations over the years, including the addition of a single-storey outbuilding in the garden and a makeshift pigsty.

He is also said to have increased security measures on the property to protect his family.

The couple have six children together: Megan, 25, twins Jack and Holly, 23, Matilda, 21, Oscar, four, and Jesse, six months.

“While many of our friends are buying their kids cars and damn iPads, we've been buying our kids marathon seats for their 18th birthdays.”

“You're running the Great Ormond Street Marathon. Here's your bib number. Now get moving.”
