Police say a student was arrested Thursday after bringing a handgun to Thomasville Middle School

THOMASVILLE, Ga. (WCTV) – A student was arrested after bringing a handgun to MacIntyre Park Middle School in Thomasville, according to a Facebook post from Thomasville Police.

According to police, the student faces two charges, including possession of a firearm on school premises and possession of a firearm by a minor.

The post states that the “weapon has been recovered” and that there were “no reports of threats or injuries.” The weapon was confiscated after another student alerted MacIntyre Principal Courtney Davenport when they saw the weapon in the student's bag, according to a news release from Thomasville City Schools.

The news comes just a day after two students and two teachers were killed in a shooting at a high school northeast of Atlanta. The horror of the tragic violence was still fresh when authorities seized the weapon at MacIntyre Park Middle School on Thursday.

Dr. George Kornegay, interim superintendent of Thomasville City Schools, said he was grateful that the student informed the school about the gun in the press release.

“We are very grateful that the student reported what she saw, as it allowed the administration to quickly recover the weapon,” Kornegay said. “I commend the student for standing up for the safety of her school, as well as the principal and security officer for responding quickly and professionally to mitigate the threat.”

After police arrested the gun and the student, the school's curfew was lifted and normal classes resumed.

In the press release, Britney Glass, a member of the Thomasville City School Board, said, “Student safety is our top priority,” while thanking the school administration, school safety officer and police for their response.

This is not the first time police have been called to MacIntyre Park Middle School for a gun incident. In 2018, two teenagers threatened to shoot a Thomasville student in a video. Officers said the gun in the video was a dummy.

Two years earlier, in 2016, a bomb threat was discovered at the middle school. Investigators say they found a note in the bathroom saying the school would be “blown up.”
