Brittany Mahomes jokes “We'll survive” despite tornado warning at first Chiefs game

Brittany Mahomes will support the Kansas City Chiefs whatever the weather.

At the 2024 NFL season opener at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri, on Thursday, September 5, spectators – including 29-year-old Mahomes – were asked to seek shelter due to a strong but brief storm that passed through the stadium.

The storm swept through the area, bringing heavy rain and lightning before the Chiefs faced the Baltimore Ravens. Kickoff was originally scheduled for 7:20 p.m. local time, but was pushed back 20 minutes to 7:40 p.m.

As the storm passed through, Brittany, the wife of quarterback Patrick Mahomes, filmed her and their daughter Sterling Skye, 3, with Chiefs towels on their heads to protect themselves from the rain. In the video, which she shared on her Instagram Stories, Brittany tells the camera, “We are surviving,” as Sterling smiles gently at the camera.

For the opening game, Brittany, who is pregnant with the couple's third child, wore a baggy white T-shirt and cargo jeans with the seams painted in the team's colors of red and yellow. Sterling wore a gorgeous red dress with matching red frilly socks. Her hair was in pigtails with pink bows.

In addition to the Mahomes family and Chiefs fans sheltering at home, another Chiefs fan, Taylor Swift, had to do the same.

Swift, 34, who is currently dating Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, 34, arrived at the stadium before the storm. The singer arrived on a golf cart and greeted fans on her way into the stadium. “Hi… how are you guys?” Swift said, strutting her stuff in thigh-high boots, shorts and a bustier top.

Chiefs CEO Clark Hunt said on Today Earlier Thursday, he said Swift's presence at games and her relationship with Kelce had “certainly had an impact on our fan base,” adding: “We have a lot more female fans now, and particularly young female fans.”

The tight end's mother, Donna, appeared at the team's official pregame show, the World's Largest Tailgate: Tailgate Games. During the event, Donna and Chiefs superfan Saturday Night Live Star Heidi Gardner – a nod to Swift – made friendship bracelets in the Chiefs’ colors.

Donna arrived at the tailgate party red carpet wearing a custom “Kelce” denim jacket—with Travis’ number 87 embroidered on the front in the Chiefs’ signature yellow and red colors—and a black Chiefs baseball cap.
