Travis Head and Mitch Marsh break powerplay record in T20 win over Scotland | Australian cricket team

Travis Head and Mitch Marsh produced a brutal batting performance to set a world record in the international T20 powerplay as Australia began their white-ball UK tour with a win over Scotland with more than half the overs remaining.

Head made 80 in 25 balls and Marsh 39 in 12, taking the pair to a total of 113 in the six overs – a mark that surpassed the 102 South Africa scored against the West Indies last year.

This enabled Australia to easily surpass the hosts' target of 155 points in the first of three T20 matches at the Grange in Edinburgh.

But the attack came after Jake Fraser-McGurk's long-awaited debut ended in failure when the young gun was caught off the third ball and mishit to midwicket.

Marsh steered Brandon McMullen's next ball just past Gully's outstretched right hand, but if this start gave Scotland any hope of an upset, it was quickly dashed.

Head hit three boundaries in the next over, two fours and two sixes in the third, and two fours and a six in the fourth, taking his total to 47 in 16 balls.

At this point, Marsh, captaining the rested Pat Cummins, joined in the fun, reaching 6, 6, 4, 6, 4, 4 in the sixth over.

Head was back in the next over and he hit 4, 6, 4, 4, 4, 4, equalling Marcus Stoinis' Australian record for the fastest T20i fifty, which he achieved off his 17th ball.

That was it for the team that had taken the ball to the neighbouring parks and tennis courts, as Marsh was caught on the next ball thrown by Mark Watt.

Watt's trick is to bowl from 25 yards and the next ball hit the stumps as Josh Inglis stepped back. Amid boos from the crowd, the verdict was deadball. The decision was later declared correct by MCC but Inglis seemed ready and watching as Watt bowled.

Head was caught in the same over after his fifth and sixth, but the contest was long over. Inglis (27 off 13) and Stoinis (eight off five) finished the match.

Previously, Australia's fast bowlers, inexperienced at international level, had quickly adapted to the conditions and slowed down the home team, which had raced to 46 points after five overs with the loss of just one wicket.

Sean Abbott, who was called into the team when Spencer Johnson was out, scored 3-39, with Xavier Bartlett besting it with 2-23 from his four overs.

Marsh chose to bat first and used six bowlers. Adam Zampa (2-33) and Riley Meredith (2-34) also played to their full potential, while Cam Green (1-12) and Stoinis (0-10) shared quota.

Bartlett, who gained UK experience with Kent this season, made his early breakthrough when Oli Hairs missed a pull and was caught by Marsh.

But after George Munsey had cleared the ropes three times, Scotland faced a challenging score when Inglis Abbott took 28 off 25 with a superb flying catch. Bartlett caught the ball for Brandon McMullen (19 off 22), who had been caught by debutant Fraser Jake-McGurk.

This is the first of eleven matches on the tour, with Australia then facing England in three T20s and five ODIs.
