Dick Cheney will vote for Kamala Harris, says his daughter Liz Cheney

Former Vice President Dick Cheney will cast his vote for Vice President Kamala Harris, his daughter, former Rep. Liz Cheney, said in an interview Friday.

Both Cheneys are Republicans. The elder served under President George W. Bush. The younger Cheney has become one of the most prominent conservative critics of former President Donald Trump.

“Dick Cheney will vote for Kamala Harris,” the former congresswoman said Friday during an interview at the Texas Tribune Festival when she was asked in an interview if she knew who her father would vote for.

“When you think about the situation we're in and how serious that situation is, my father believes – and he's said it publicly – that there has never been anyone in our country who poses as great a threat to our democracy as Donald Trump,” Cheney said. “And that's exactly the situation we're facing.”

Liz Cheney said in her announcement at Duke University on Wednesday that people “especially in the swing states do not have the luxury of writing the candidates' names on the ballot box.”

“Because of the danger posed by Donald Trump, not only will I not vote for Donald Trump, I will vote for Kamala Harris,” she said on Wednesday.

When asked for comment on Cheney's comments, Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung replied, “Who the hell is Liz Cheney?”

The former congresswoman also said in her interview with the Atlantic's Mark Leibovich on Friday that she would support Texas Rep. Colin Allred in his run for Senate. Allred is challenging Sen. Ted Cruz, who has served in the Senate since 2013.

“Here in Texas, you have an outstanding, serious candidate for the United States Senate, and his name is—” she paused as the audience cheered, and Leibovich asked to let her speak.

“It’s not Ted Cruz,” she said.

Cheney then praised Allred's qualifications and pointed to the time she had spent with him in the House of Representatives.

“We need people who will serve in good faith,” Cheney said. “We are people who are honorable public servants, and in this race that's Colin Allred, so I'm going to campaign for him.”

Neither the Allred nor the Cruz campaign team immediately responded to a request for comment.
