Dick Cheney will vote for Kamala Harris, announces his daughter

Former Republican Vice President Dick Cheney will vote for the incumbent vice president this November, his daughter announced Friday.

Liz Cheney, who represented Wyoming in the House of Representatives from 2017 to 2023, said at a newspaper festival in Texas that her father considered former President Donald Trump a “threat to our democracy.”

“Dick Cheney will vote for Kamala Harris,” she said in a public interview. “My father believes – and he has said this publicly – that there has never been anyone in our country who poses as great a threat to our democracy as Donald Trump. And that is exactly the moment we are facing.”

In 2022, former Vice President Cheney claimed that Trump attempted to rig the 2020 election by urging his supporters to protest the certification of the results on January 6, 2021. Trump has also since insisted that he won the election, despite losing to President Joe Biden.

“He tried to rig the last election with lies and violence to stay in power after voters rejected him,” former Vice President Cheney said in a campaign video for his daughter. “He's a coward. A real man wouldn't lie to his supporters.”

The former vice president added that he believes most Republicans know that Trump lost the election. Liz Cheney said Friday that there are many political candidates across the country who are committed to “election denial.”

Trump's running mate, Senator JD Vance (R-Ohio), had previously claimed the 2020 election was “stolen,” telling ABC News in February that there were “a lot of problems.”

Liz Cheney argued on Friday that a “chasm” had opened up in American politics, adding that Americans must work together to build “a better future” for the country. Earlier this week, she also endorsed Harris herself.
