Jannik Sinner beats Jack Draper and reaches the final of the US Open

On Sunday, top-seeded Italian Jannik Sinner will face an American in the men's singles final of the US Open.

Sinner defeated 25th-seeded Briton Jack Draper 7-5, 7-6 (3), 6-2 in the first semifinal on Friday to reach his second Grand Slam final this year after his victory at the Australian Open in January.

In two consecutive games in the second set, Draper vomited between points behind the baseline and Sinner fell behind the baseline and injured his left wrist on a point he ultimately won.

Both men were received by medical staff at the next change.

The 23-year-old Sinner will face either number 12 Taylor Fritz or number 20 Frances Tiafoe in the championship game.

Fritz and Tiafoe will meet later Friday at Arthur Ashe Stadium, both seeking to become the first Americans to reach a Grand Slam singles final since Andy Roddick at Wimbledon in 2009.

“I'm just happy to be here in the final,” Sinner said in an interview on the court. “Whoever it is, it will be a very tough challenge for me.”

Sinner could become the second Italian to win multiple Grand Slam singles tournaments and the first to do so in the Open Era (since 1968). Nicola Pietrangeli won the men's French Open in 1959 and 1960.

Before this run, the 22-year-old Draper had never made it past the fourth round of a Grand Slam tournament and had never made it past the quarterfinals of a high-level tournament.

In his first five matches, he did not drop a set or face a tiebreak. The last player to do so at the US Open was Russian Nikolay Davydenko in 2007.
