Bill Belichick reveals why Jason Kelce drove him 'crazy' as Patriots coach as they analyze their past NFL battles

Bill Belichick admitted that his New England Patriots team never got a handle on Jason Kelce when they talked football strategy on one of the legendary coach's new shows.

Belichick resigned as head coach of the New England Patriots in January after 24 seasons, a remarkable tenure in which he won six Super Bowls.

He faced Kelce, who played center for the Philadelphia Eagles, four times during his coaching career before retiring in March after 13 seasons.

But the legendary coach has now admitted that he never got a handle on Kelce and every strategy to minimize him failed. Belichick's record against Kelce is 2-2.

On Underdog Fantasy's “Coach with Bill Belichick,” 72-year-old former Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia explained how they would try to shut down Kelce.

Belichick said: “We have what we call 'go-to guys,' and usually that's a receiver or tight end like (Zach) Ertz, someone like that.”

“We played against you, Kelce is a guy you can count on, and I would say, 'Don't let him pull. I don't want to see him run anybody outside the numbers. Cover him, get to him, and if he pulls, get him.' You pulled anyway. It drove me crazy.”

Patricia continued, “It's a long Tuesday for me. Game planning like 'Hey Matt, did we cover center Kelce? Yes, Coach, we covered him. Can he pull? No, he can't pull. He pulls!'”

“I then say, 'Coach, I don't know what to tell you right now.'”

Kelce then interrupted him and said, “Just let me pull. I don't care if his head is up, just send a defender down, he's not going to make the tackle. Let me out of here.”

“But yeah, I think if I had the game planned against me, I would have done the same thing. Don't let me get to the second level, let me block the big guy up front. That's not my strength.”

Belichick: “We've tried so hard. I wish you would have retired five years ago.” Kelce joked in response: “Same to you, coach.”

After his retirement, Kelce was inundated with commercial and media opportunities.

He is currently preparing for his new role at ESPN and recently discussed covering his younger brother Travis when the Kansas City Chiefs face the New Orleans Saints on October 7.

Speaking to PEOPLE, Jason confidently stated that he would criticize his brother fairly, but that he would still enjoy the work.

“I don't know if I'm going to treat Travis any differently than anyone else. I mean, I feel like I've been praising him for as long as I can remember,” he notes.

“I have to be honest, I think that's important when you're commentating. So I'm just going to try to do that and just naturally say what I think and not think about it too much.”

Kelce's first game on Monday night will be a highly anticipated game between the San Francisco 49ers and the New York Jets.
