Taylor Fritz's girlfriend celebrates Zverev's victory after Wimbledon saga | Tennis | Sport

Zverev was never convicted and the German maintains his innocence.

But Riddle kept the celebrations a little more subdued this time, opting for a simple “semi-final,” accompanied by three emojis with painted nails.

Aside from the war of words, the victory marked a turning point in Frtiz's career, as the 26-year-old had never advanced beyond the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam before Tuesday's triumph.

This year alone he reached two, after being eliminated in the quarterfinals at both the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

However, as the trend towards quarter-finals has changed, Fritz insists there is still work to be done: “I have watched quarter-finals a lot in recent years, but today it was just different.”

“It's cool that I'm in the semifinals. But I still think: 'The work is not done yet.'”

“One question I was asked practically every time I lost in the quarterfinals was, 'What do I need to do to advance?' And my answer was always, 'I just need to keep putting myself in those situations and then I'll get more comfortable in them and get better.'

“That's definitely happened now. The quarterfinals didn't feel like, I don't know, this big deal to me, like it probably has in the past.”

It's been over two decades since an American won the men's singles title at the US Open, but one homegrown star is assured of at least a place in this year's final.

That's because Fritz's semifinal opponent on Friday night is world number 20 and fellow American Frances Tiafoe.

On the other side of the US Open draw, Jack Draper will face Alex de Minaur in the third semi-final.

Meanwhile, world number one Jannik Sinner is aiming for his third of four semifinal appearances at a Grand Slam tournament this year in his duel against Daniil Medvedev.
