Sparks vs Sky – Predictions, Tips & Odds – 9-7

The Chicago Sky are clinging to the final spot in the WNBA playoffs and are desperately hoping for a win on Friday night when they host the Los Angeles Sparks.

Despite losing seven games in a row, Chicago is still considered a 5-point favorite tonight, and my Sparks vs. Sky prediction is justified.

My analysis
Somehow, the Chicago Sky have not made it out of the playoffs despite seven straight losses, including a 90-71 loss to the Las Vegas Aces in their last game.

Now, however, there is no room for error. Chicago, Atlanta and Washington all have 11 wins and a loss would drop them from eighth place.

The Sky have struggled to score points. Over their last seven games, they're averaging a measly 74.1 points per game, the lowest point total of any WNBA team during that span. Their 41.1% field goal percentage is only better than the Atlanta Dream's 38.8%, and they're losing the ball a league-high 16.7 times per game.

A defense that ranks in the top half of the league in terms of opponent scoring is scoring 84 points per game on 44.1% shooting from the field, and that doesn't come close to compensating for Chicago's sputtering offense.

Perhaps the only good news for Sky is that the Los Angeles Sparks have been in crisis for weeks. Injuries and poor play have left the Sparks reeling, and they have only won two of their last 13 games. They also have the worst points differential in the league at minus 7.4.

This will be the third and final meeting between these teams, with the Sky seeking a second consecutive series win. They sneaked past the Sparks 90-86 on August 17. The first meeting was on May 30, an 83-73 win, before the Sparks ended their season.

Can the Sparks be a spoiler? Looking at their last seven games, in which they've gone 1-6, LA has a 5-2-0 record against the spread. However, only one of those lines was lower than Friday's 5-point spread, and only one of those wins was for a cover under double digits.

This is the break Chicago needs. If the Sky are serious about the playoffs, this has to be a clear win.

Angel Reese Over 27.5 points + rebound

Even as the losses mount, Sky rookie Angel Reese has been working hard. She has now played 27 games with at least 10 rebounds after recording another double-double with 12 points and 16 rebounds in the loss to the Aces.

Reese totaled 27.5 points and rebounds on Friday, and that's a respectable number considering she's totaled 28 or more points in five of her last seven games.

One of those games she went down in was against those Sparks – which happened to be the last time the Sky won a game. With so much at stake, expect Reese to play a major role in this must-win game.

Although it's been a rough year for the Sparks overall, Dearica Hamby has had a solid season, averaging 17.5 points and 9.5 rebounds. Her scoring average on Friday looks like a reasonable 16.5 points, but the Sparks forward's play has slipped since the Olympic break.

Hamby has scored fewer than 17 points seven times in her last nine games. One of those games was against the Sky, where she managed just seven points on 2 of 8 shooting. She has failed to score above double figures four times in that time.
