Mississippi High School Football Games of the Week: September 5-7

Brandon, Madison Central And Louisville each won top 10 games last week, while Oak Grove, West Jones, Clinton And Germantown The second week of high school football in Mississippi also has some exciting encounters in store.

This week's programme features a spectacular showdown between the top-ranked Madison Central and No. 2 Brandon.

#1 Madison Central at #2 Brandon — Friday, September 6th
Madison Central opened the season with a top-10 27-20 win over Ocean Springs. Ocean Springs shut out Madison Central for most of the first half – until Madison Central running back Glen Singleton scored four consecutive rushing touchdowns. Brandon was featured in another of Mississippi's top-10 games in Week 1, defeating then-No. 7 team Picayune Memorial 60-34. Star junior defensive back Preston Ashley scored a 45-yard scoop-and-score touchdown, Logan Drummond brought the punt 55 meters back into the house and Trey McQueen returned an interception 38 yards for a point on a night of unconventional scoring for the Bulldogs. Madison Central beat Brandon 40-26 last year.

#20 West Point at #3 Starkville — Friday, September 6
West Point lost a heartbreaking game against Louisville in a top-10 game last Friday. Louisville scored the only points of the second half – a 21-yard field goal that put the Wildcats ahead. Starkville defeated Noxubee County 43-22 in week one. Tyson Knox signed by Mississippi State KaMario Taylor at Starkville's own 1-yard line to preserve the Yellowjackets' 14-point lead in the second half. Two plays later, quarterback Jaylen Ruffin hit Jaheim Deanes for a 97-yard touchdown. Starkville won 39-28 on the road at West Point last season.

#11 Ocean Springs at #4 Oak Grove — Friday, September 6
Ocean Springs fought a tough battle against top-ranked Madison Central last week, losing 27-20. The Greyhounds managed to shut down Madison Central for most of the first half until running back Glen Singleton scored four points. Oak Grove won its game against No. 15 Grenada Quarterback of Oak Grove Kellon Hall threw 19 of 27 passes for 306 yards and scored one touchdown.

#22 South Panola at #9 Oxford — Friday, September 6
South Panola lost against Germantown (Tenn.) 21-14 in week one. Anderrious Flowers led the team with 81 yards in the running game. Oxford beat Lafayette 45-0 in the Crosstown Classic last week. All six of the Chargers' touchdowns came on the ground. Oxford beat South Panola 31-14 in 2023.

#13 Pearl at #24 Warren Central — Friday, September 6
Pearl won a tough season opening game 26-20 over Neshoba Centralthe former team of the Pirates' new head coach, Patrick Schooler. Pearl took a 19-0 lead before Neshoba got on the scoreboard. Warren Central suffered a 26-20 loss to Clinton. Quarterback of the Vikings Nash Morgan threw 20 of 30 passes for 243 yards and caught a touchdown pass on a trick play. Pearl won last year's game against Warren Central 25-24 in overtime.

#25 Gautier at #21 D'Iberville — Friday, September 6
Guatier reached a 1-0 record last week with a narrow 26-23 win over Harrison Central. Run back Trey Irving ran for the winning touchdown in overtime, while Fred Nicholson recorded 10 tackles and two interceptions. D'Iberville beat Columbia 51-15 in week one. Second year student Jaylen Johnson caught 12 passes for 90 yards and three touchdowns. Gautier beat D'Iberville 41-20 last season.
