DHS identifies salmonella infections linked to recalled eggs from Milo's Poultry Farms

MADISON, Wis. (WBAY) – A voluntary food recall has been ordered for Milo's Poultry Farms and Tony's Fresh Market brand eggs. Forty-two people in Wisconsin have become ill, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) reported Friday.

DHS is working with the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP), local health departments and federal partners to investigate a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella infections linked to eggs from a Wisconsin farm. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 65 people in nine states have been infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella. This includes 42 people who live in Wisconsin.

According to DATCP, Milo's Poultry Farms LLC of Bonduel issued the recall on Friday because these eggs may be contaminated with salmonella.

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

According to DHS, the eggs were distributed through retail stores and food suppliers in Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan and are now being recalled. The recall includes all egg types, including conventional free-range eggs, organic eggs and non-GMO eggs, carton sizes and best-before dates in containers labeled “Milo's Poultry Farms” or “Tony's Fresh Market.”

Anyone who purchased the recalled eggs is advised not to eat or cook with them and to throw them away. Restaurants should not sell or serve recalled eggs.

Milo's Poultry Farms eggs were distributed through retail stores and grocery wholesalers in Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan.

This recall includes:

  • All carton sizes and all egg varieties are labeled “Milo's Poultry Farms.” This recall applies to all expiration dates.
  • All carton sizes of Tony's Fresh Market brand eggs. This recall includes all expiration dates.
  • All egg cartons for food retail. This recall includes all eggs with a best-before date.

The recall was initiated after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) informed the company that environmental samples had tested positive for the bacteria.

The FDA also conducted a full genome sequencing and found that the samples were consistent with an ongoing Salmonella Investigation of the outbreak.

Milo's Poultry Farms, LLC has suspended production and distribution at this time and will conduct appropriate testing and disinfection of the farms and processing equipment.

Consumers who have purchased eggs from Milo's Poultry Farms or Tony's Fresh Market are urged not to consume them. Consumers with questions may contact the company at (715) 758-6709.

If you have eaten one of the recalled eggs and have symptoms of salmonella infection, contact a doctor immediately. Tell them that you may have come into contact with salmonella. Signs and symptoms of salmonella infection include diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever, and vomiting that lasts for several days.
