Winona Ryder reveals why her parents refused to move her to LA as a child: “Very suspicious of Hollywood”

Winona Ryder has revealed that her parents were “very suspicious of Hollywood” throughout her childhood.

The 52-year-old actress from “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” rose to world fame in the late 1980s, but her parents were against her packing her things and moving to Hollywood at a young age.

Instead, they drove seven hours from San Francisco to Los Angeles for each audition.

“I couldn't work when it coincided with school,” Ryder told AnOther Magazine. “My parents – who are actually my best friends – were very suspicious of Hollywood.”

“They linked it to the Judy Garland tragedy, and we never moved there,” she added, referring to the late actress' fatal overdose.

Ryder added that she would need to “have good grades” to continue auditioning.

“It was a real gift because I knew a lot of kids who went through that,” she said. “They moved and had to support their whole family, and it didn't end so well. I knew a lot of kids who had burnout.”

Ryder said she later heard that she had “a reputation for being very picky” about acting projects, “when in reality we just couldn't afford to go.”

Elsewhere, the “Stranger Things” star said she became famous at an “interesting” moment.

“In the '70s there was this revolution in film, but then in the mid-'80s they found this formula in American films, be it Rambo or John Hughes, where you are the little sister or the daughter. There were girls or there were women,” she said.

“That's a big reason why I wanted to make films like 'Heathers' or 'Little Women' – because we didn't have much of that period of puberty, either in film or in literature. Men had it. Men had 'Lord of the Flies' and Holden Caulfield.”

Her Beetlejuice co-star Jenna Ortega echoed this sentiment, revealing that she often turns to Ryder for advice on dealing with fame.

“I'm very grateful to be where I am, and she had something similar to say,” Ortega, 21, told MTV.

“It was just so nice to talk to someone who really understood me because… you know, you can turn to your family who loves you and supports you, but they don't know. You know?”

“It was really insightful and enlightening – and that was definitely one of the things that bonded us,” she added.
