The new iPhone will use Arm's chip technology for AI, reports the FT

(Reuters) – Apple's latest iPhone with its A18 chip, due to be unveiled at an event on Monday, was developed using the latest V9 chip design from SoftBank-owned Arm, the Financial Times newspaper reported on Saturday.

Apple will hold its fall event on September 9 at its headquarters in Cupertino, California, where it is expected to unveil a number of new iPhones as well as updates to other devices and apps.

Apple signed a deal with Arm in September last year that extends “beyond 2040” and is intended to give Arm a boost in chip technology.

Arm said in July that its V9 chip was responsible for 50% of smartphone sales.

Arm owns the intellectual property behind the computer architecture of most smartphones worldwide and licenses it to Apple and many others.

Apple uses Arm's technology to design its own chips for its iPhones, iPads and Macs.

The two companies have a long history – Apple was one of the first to join forces to form the company in 1990, even before the release of its Newton handheld computer in 1993, which used an Arm-based processor chip.

The Newton flopped, but Arm gained the leading position in the field of mobile phone chips due to its low power consumption and the resulting longer battery life.
