Barkley dominates, Love apparently suffers injury as Eagles beat Packers: Live updates, reactions

The Eagles have not yet assembled their “best five” in the secondary. It's interesting that defensive coordinator Vic Fangio decided to use Quinyon Mitchell only as an outside cornerback after talking throughout training camp like he would also play nickelback. Instead, Avonte Maddox started at nickelback. This arrangement may be untenable.

Maddox was targeted on two consecutive plays, receiving a pass interference penalty on the first and conceding a touchdown on the second. But beyond the performance of individual players in the slot, there were breakdowns in coverage elsewhere as well.

Love hit the completely free Jayden Reed for a 70-yard touchdown and safety CJ Gardner-Johnson missed a tackle that could have saved the score. Mitchell clearly belongs on the outside. Love tested him deep early and Mitchell batted away Christian Watson's pass. Mitchell also stretched laterally laterally in the game to deflect a sideline pass near the uprights. But who will be the defense's nickel in Week 2? Maddox? Cooper DeJean? Maybe it depends on whether Isaiah Rodgers is available. He was inactive Friday because of a hand injury and has been the cornerback during training camp when Mitchell played nickel.
