The U.S. Air Force Academy is mourning the loss of 19-year-old Cadet 4th Class Avery Koonce of Taylor, Texas. Cadet Koonce was found unconscious in her dormitory Wednesday night. Academy first responders were called and attempted life-saving measures, but were unsuccessful. The cause of death is currently under investigation. “We lost an incredible teammate last night – although Avery was only with us for a short time, she had a positive impact on her unit, her intercollegiate team and her class – her loss will be felt throughout USAFA,” said Lt. Gen. Tony Bauernfeind, superintendent of the U.S. Air Force Academy. “Our team is focused on supporting Avery's family, Cadet Squadron 38, the track and field team and the entire Academy family.” Cadet Koonce, a member of the Class of 2028, was an athlete on the women's track and field team. A comprehensive range of support services are available to the Academy's cadets, faculty and staff, including chaplains, psychologists, leaders and others.
