Live updates England vs Republic of Ireland: Lee Carsley lets Grealish and Alexander-Arnold start in first game

Carsley is far from the only man in football today with links to these two nations.

Two of the players selected for his squad – Declan Rice and Jack Grealish – played for the Republic of Ireland before switching their international affiliation to England.

Irish fans will surely remember that Grealish represented Ireland at U17, U18 and U21 levels through his Irish grandparents, but when he began to make a name for himself at Aston Villa, he switched sides and was called up to the England U21 team before becoming a senior international in September 2020.

Rice even went a step further, winning three trophies for the Republic of Ireland senior team under Martin O'Neill in 2018. In February 2019, he made the controversial decision to move to England.

I imagine the home fans at the Aviva Stadium will have some pretty harsh words to say to these two!
