Are you ready for the big event?

September is National Preparedness Month, and with the recent earthquakes in Southern California, it's time to get serious about preparedness.

“California is an earthquake zone,” said Janiele Maffei of the California Earthquake Authority. “It carries two-thirds of the earthquake risk in our country.”

Maffei told Karen Aams of KNX News that while earthquakes do not occur all the time, we still need to keep an eye on them.

“You just have to make a plan with your family about what you're going to do, where you're going to meet, who you're going to call,” she said. “And then there are other things we can do, some of them are certainly a little more expensive when we look at the vulnerabilities in our homes, but it's extremely important that a family understands their risks and takes steps to mitigate those risks.”

According to Maffei, if your home was built before the 1980s or has a raised foundation, it is at risk and should be retrofitted.
