Parents speak out after UW announces removal of Brick Walk of Fame | News

MADISON, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Madison is preparing to build its new training facility near Camp Randall Stadium, but the decision is drawing heavy criticism after the athletic department announced it would remove bricks from the Brick Walk of Fame.

The bricks are located at Camp Randall and are often dedicated to deceased alumni and fans.

Brad Wendlandt is a University of Wisconsin graduate who lost his daughter Candice after graduating from the University of Wisconsin.

Candice was in Wisconsin's band for five years and later became a teacher in the Madison Metropolitan School District. Her bandmates purchased a brick in honor of her life.

“So it was a real shock to us when we learned solely through word of mouth that the UW was planning to essentially raze these historical memories that are part of this brick path without making them public in any way,” Brad said.

Now Brad and others have until September 8th to register and take possession of their brick.

“UW is spending $300 million on this project, on this new practice facility. And it just shocks me that they couldn't set aside $10,000 or $15,000 to just build a new paved patio with these memorial stones that they couldn't find space for,” said Brad

News 3 Now reached out to UW Athletics for comment on the stones and received a statement:

“We have heard from a number of people who have purchased bricks and we are listening to the concerns raised. We recognize and value the emotions and stories behind the names on the bricks. We recognize the significance of the bricks and are in the midst of discussions about how to address this situation in the future.”
