Game updates, live scores in college football

The Michigan State football team did just enough to come away with a win in Week 1 of the 2024 college football season and usher in the Jonathan Smith era.

The Spartans (1-0) will face tougher competition this week when they face Maryland (1-0) in their Big Ten Conference opener on Saturday in College Park, Md. While Michigan State leads the overall standings between the two programs at 10-4, the Terrapins have won two straight games, including a 31-9 victory in East Lansing in 2023.

Running back Kay'Ron Lynch-Adams finished with nine carries for 101 yards and a touchdown to help Smith to the win in his debut as Spartans coach.

Meanwhile, Maryland is coming off a 50-7 win over UConn in Week 1. Terrapins quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. threw for 311 yards and two touchdowns in the win, while Tai Felton caught seven passes for 178 yards and both of Edwards' pass TDs.

Michigan State responds with a TD drive to equalize

16:02: Aidan Chiles leads Michigan State down the field on a touchdown drive to respond to Maryland's scoring drive. Chiles hits Montorie Foster Jr. for a 9-yard touchdown pass to tie the score on the eight-play, 84-yard drive that takes 3:07 off the clock.

Nate Carter gains 30 yards on this drive, which is one of the bigger plays. A 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty against the Terrapins also helps the Spartans on this drive.

The Spartans initially want to go to two, but eventually score the extra point and tie the score at 7:7.

Maryland opens the scoring with a touchdown

15:51: Tai Felton scores the first goal for Maryland with a 15-yard touchdown pass from Billy Edwards Jr. The scoring drive: 14 plays over 75 yards and 6:30 minutes off the clock.

Edwards Jr. makes a nifty shovel throw to Dylan Wade for a third-and-8 conversion, one of four third-down conversions on the Terrpains' drive. On the drive, Edwards misses a couple of open deep throws to Kaden Prather and Tai Felton. Both players have space and are thrown too far — that's something to watch. On another deep throw to Prather, defensive pass interference is called against Charles Brantley.

15:40: Michigan State won the coin toss and pushed the game to the second half. Maryland gets the ball first. Jonathan Kim's kick was a touchback.
