Nicole Kidman mourns the loss of her mother Janelle Ann Kidman.

On Saturday, Kidman – who won best actress at the Venice Film Festival for her role in “Babygirl” but had to miss the ceremony to be with her family – shared the news of her mother's death in a statement released by the film's director, Halina Reijn.

“I arrived in Venice and learned shortly after that my beautiful, brave mother, Janelle Ann Kidman, had just died,” Kidman said in a statement, according to the Associated Press. “I am in shock and need to be with my family, but this award is for her. She shaped and made me.”

A spokesperson for Kidman confirmed the death and told Fox News Digital: “The family is heartbroken and asks for privacy at this time.”

Nicole Kidman says the erotic thriller “Babygirl” was “liberating” but left her feeling “very exposed.”

Over the years, Kidman has spoken openly about her close bond with her mother and provided insight into her mother's health struggles.

In an interview with NPR's Fresh Air podcast in 2022, Kidman said, “I'm at a point where I'm getting a chance to see the world. Through our closeness, my mom is giving me a chance to see the world through the eyes of an 81-year-old woman. That's so helpful right now because she's so aware. She has all the capabilities of her brain at her disposal, so she hasn't lost anything. She hasn't lost any memory, which is fascinating, and she's extremely intelligent.”

“She gives me access because she is also very direct and very honest, and so I get access to the world through her eyes, my mother's eyes, so a part of me, almost at 80,” she continued. “It's her perspective, of course. There are many different perspectives of an 80-year-old, but it's her perspective and her particular path, but I soak it up and learn.”

“She gave me the fire to pursue the career that I have because I always wanted to please her,” Kidman told the outlet in 2020. “But she also forged her own path and wanted her daughters to have the same opportunity to follow their own paths.”

“Mom didn't necessarily have the career she wanted, but she was determined that her daughters would have the same opportunities,” Kidman added. “That gave me my life. And she gave me my life, her and my dad.”

Kidman's father, Antony Kidman, died in 2014.
