OA NEWS SPORTS STAFF

Jackson Kilgore threw two game-winning passes to Josh Askew in the fourth quarter and the Auburn High School football team came back to defeat Opelika 28-21 in an epic rivalry game on Friday at Duck Samford Stadium.

Opelika had just scored a point early in the fourth quarter and was ahead 21-14 when Kilgore, starting the ensuing drive with AHS at its own 20-yard line, fired his first deep throw to Askew. Askew caught it on the run and ran to the 1-yard line, giving Omar Mabson the opportunity to score the tying touchdown moments later.

One series later, Kilgore dropped back from the Opelika 29-yard line and threw another dime to Askew in the back of the end zone, giving Auburn High a 28-21 lead with 5:45 left in the fourth quarter.

Opelika penetrated AHS territory late, but linebacker Alex Gamston deflected an Opelika pass at the line, tracked it in the air and caught it for a game-winning interception.
