Friday night’s notable Nebraska high school football games and top performers

Check out highlights of some notable games and top performances from Friday night’s action in Nebraska high school football.

Late scores lift top-ranked Wahoo

The showdown between Class C-1 No. 1 Wahoo and No. 2 Ashland-Greenwood was knotted 14-14 midway through the fourth quarter.

But a 1-yard run by Harrison Krueger put the Warriors up with 5:18 left, then Kip Brigham capped his night with a 63-run TD run with 3:53 left in the 28-14 Wahoo win. Brigham finished with 186 yards and three TDs.

That win gears up the Warriors for a matchup against No. 4 Aurora next week. Ashland-Greenwood, meanwhile, which beat Douglas County West 7-3 in the final seconds in Week 1, faces Columbus Scotus.

Aurora, which lost its opener to Pierce, will likely drop in the rankings as it brings a 0-2 record into the game. McCook beat the Huskies 33-14 Friday.

Bearcats roll rival

The rivalry game between Kearney and Grand Island was all Bearcats. They cruised to a 42-0 victory Friday.

Griffin Novacek led the way with touchdown runs of 15 and 10 yards and a TD pass of 15 yards in the first half. His 30-yard scoring strike to open the third quarter made it 35-0.

Kearney hasn’t allowed a point in the first two games heading into next week’s matchup with Millard South.

Streak stays alive

SEM, No. 1 in Six Man, extended its winning streak to 14 games with a 36-33 comeback win over Stuart, which led 27-20 after three quarters.

SEM won the program’s first state title last November.

One vs. One

One of the top games on next Friday’s schedule will feature the Eight-Man top-ranked teams.

Central Valley, No. 1 in Eight Man-2, has averaged 52 points in its first two games. It hosts defending Eight Man-1 champ Stanton, which led Wausa-Osmond 50-0 early in the third quarter en route to a 56-6 win.

In the top Eight-Man games Friday, Sandy Creek — No. 2 in Eight Man-1 — scored 22 second-quarter points in a 28-8 win over No. 4 Shelby-Rising City.

Also next week, a challenging start to the season continues for Boone Central. Last year’s C-1 champ, who dropped to C-2, shut out Hartington Cedar Catholic in the first week before falling to Norfolk Catholic on Thursday.

The Cardinals face C-2 No. 2 Battle Creek next.
