Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese is out for the rest of the WNBA season due to a wrist injury

CHICAGO (AP) — Angel Reese’s historic rookie season is over.

The Chicago Sky striker said on social media Saturday night that she has sustained a season-ending wrist injury. The team confirmed that it is an injury.

“What a year. I never thought the last basket of my rookie season would be a 3 but maybe that was God saying give them a taste of what they'll see even more in year two lol,” Reese wrote. “Through it all, I showed that I belonged in this league even when no one else believed I did. All I ever wanted was to get to the W and make an impact. I can safely say I accomplished that and will strive to continue to do so.”

Reese, the No. 7 pick in the draft, finished the season averaging 13.6 points and 13.1 rebounds, the highest rebounding average in WNBA history. Reese also set a rookie record with 26 double-doubles, her most recent of which came Friday night in a 92-78 win over Los Angeles.

Reese has been close with Indiana rookie Caitlin Clark since the two met in the NCAA championship two years ago. Reese's LSU team emerged victorious. The two have led the WNBA in ratings, viewership and merchandise sales this season.

Entering the season, Reese had 15 consecutive games with a double-double, breaking the league record. She also set the record for total rebounds in a season, surpassing Sylvia Fowles' record of 404. The Sky rookie finished this year with 446 total rebounds — including a record 172 on offense. Las Vegas Aces star A'ja Wilson has 406 rebounds this season.

Chicago is fighting for the last playoff spot in the WNBA and is currently tied with Atlanta in eighth place. The Sky host Dallas on Sunday.

Reese is set to play in the new 3-on-3 league “Unrivaled,” which will launch in Miami this winter.
