A missing, newly married nurse was found dead – and her neighbor was charged with murder

CNN

Three days after a newlywed Oregon nurse was reported missing, she has been found dead and police have arrested one of her neighbors.

Melissa Jubane, 32, was reported missing Wednesday after she failed to show up for her morning shift as a nurse at Providence St. Vincent Center in Portland, “causing concern among her coworkers, friends and family,” Beaverton police said in a Facebook post Saturday morning.

According to the post, police searched her Beaverton apartment but were unable to locate her. Her “absence without notice was deemed unusual and concerning.”

“Efforts by officials and family members to contact Melissa throughout the day were unsuccessful as her phone appeared to be turned off,” the post said. “In addition, searches of Melissa's bank and credit card records did not reveal any new information regarding her whereabouts.”

After an “extensive” investigation, police identified one of Jubane's neighbors, 27-year-old Bryce Johnathan Schubert, as “involved in her disappearance,” the post said.

He was arrested on Friday evening and Jubane's remains were recovered, the post added.

According to records, the suspect is being held in the Washington County Jail and may face a first-degree murder charge. CNN was unable to locate an attorney for Schubert, nor was it able to locate any family members.

Jubane got married last week, according to CNN affiliate KHLN

In a statement provided to CNN, Providence Health & Services, the operator of the hospital where Jubane worked, said her death “comes as a shock to all of us and her colleagues mourn her loss.”

“Melissa was an exceptional nurse who was committed to our Providence mission and demonstrated our values of compassion, excellence and integrity on a daily basis,” the organization said. “Melissa was a Providence person and we will miss her.”

Schubert previously worked as a nurse at another Portland hospital operated by Providence Health & Services, the company told CNN.

A friend of Jubane said, according to CNN affiliate KATU, that she loved helping people. “She had a really big heart. No matter what the situation or what it was, she was always willing to help people.”

Beaverton police said the investigation into Jubane's death is ongoing.
