Officials confirm details of shooting

LONDON, Ky. (WYMT) – UPDATE: Officials from the East Bernstadt Fire and Rescue Department said access to Exit 49 will remain closed until further notice.

UPDATE: Laurel County Sheriff John Root reported that officers were called to a shooting victim on I-75 at Exit 49, about eight miles north of London, at 5:30 p.m. on the afternoon of September 7.

When officers arrived, they found that nine vehicles had been shot at on I-75 north and south.

Five victims were seriously injured and taken to local hospitals. Other departments and a special operations team secured the accident scene.

I-75 was closed for several hours during the investigation.

Authorities have identified 32-year-old Joesph A. Couch of Woodbine, Kentucky, as a person of interest in the case.

Couch is considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached.

The crime scene will be cordoned off and investigations will continue at dawn on Sunday morning.

Several authorities are supporting the investigation.

UPDATE: City of London Mayor Randall Weddle confirmed to WYMT that there were five victims in the shooting.

UPDATE: Officials with the Laurel County Sheriff's Office have confirmed that I-75 is reopened in both directions.

They are urging people to proceed with caution as Joseph Couch, the person they are looking for, has not been found.

UPDATE: Officials with the Laurel County Sheriff's Office are searching for a person of interest in connection with the shooting that occurred Saturday on I-75 at Exit 49 and KY-909.

According to officials, 32-year-old Joseph A. Couch is a suspect.

He is described as white, 1.78 m tall and weighing about 70 kg.

Couch is considered armed and dangerous.

UPDATE: Gilbert Acciardo of the Laurel County Sheriff's Office confirmed to WYMT that there are several serious injuries but no confirmed deaths as of 8:08 p.m.

The shooter has still not been caught and residents are being asked to stay in their homes.

ORIGINAL STORY: City of London Mayor Randall Weddle confirmed to WYMT that a shooting is underway in London.

Trooper Scottie Pennington of Kentucky State Police Post 11 confirmed that the suspect has still not been caught.

Shots were fired on I-75 near exit 49.

The Laurel County Sheriff's Office has confirmed that multiple people were shot.

Les Dixon, media liaison for the Kentucky Department of Transportation's 11th District, said I-75, as well as KY 909 and US 25 in Laurel County, are currently closed.

I-75 is closed from exit 41 to exit 59.
